{"id":143638,"date":"2018-06-20T05:50:12","date_gmt":"2018-06-20T05:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/peter-thomson-golfer-who-won-five-open-championships-dies\/"},"modified":"2018-06-20T05:50:12","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T05:50:12","slug":"peter-thomson-golfer-who-won-five-open-championships-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/peter-thomson-golfer-who-won-five-open-championships-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Thomson: Golfer who won five Open Championships dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>                                  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Thomson holds his third Open Championship trophy in 1956\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/396E\/production\/_102120741_gettyimages-515016090.jpg\"\/>Image copyright                  Getty Images<figcaption>Image caption                                      Peter Thomson holds his third Open Championship trophy in 1956                              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"caps\">Peter Thomson, one of Australia&#039;s greatest golfers and a five-time Open Championship winner, has died aged 88.<\/p>\n<p>Thomson had been suffering from Parkinson&#039;s disease for more than four years and died at his home in Melbourne on Wednesday, Golf Australia said.<\/p>\n<p>In 1954, he became the first Australian to claim the Open Championship in Britain. <\/p>\n<p>He is survived by his wife, Mary, four children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Among numerous accolades, Thomson was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1979 and an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Only four other golfers - Harry Vardon, JH Taylor, James Braid and Tom Watson - have won as many Open Championships. Thomson also had great success on the American circuit.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his playing achievements, he went on to be president of the Australian PGA for 32 years and helped establish the Asian Tour.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes posted online celebrated him as a towering figure of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>                           Skip Twitter post  by @RichardMarlesMP                              <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Australia&#039;s greatest male golfer has left us.
