{"id":142314,"date":"2018-06-17T08:54:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-17T08:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/moscow-crash-taxi-driver-feared-crowd-lynching\/"},"modified":"2018-06-17T08:54:52","modified_gmt":"2018-06-17T08:54:52","slug":"moscow-crash-taxi-driver-feared-crowd-lynching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/moscow-crash-taxi-driver-feared-crowd-lynching\/","title":{"rendered":"Moscow crash taxi driver &#8216;feared crowd lynching&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>                                  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Damaged taxi in Moscow on 16 June 2018\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/E1C5\/production\/_102079775_mediaitem102079772.jpg\"\/>Image copyright                  Reuters<figcaption>Image caption                                      The car came to a halt after hitting a road sign                              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"caps\">The Moscow taxi driver who ploughed into pedestrians says he fled because he feared the crowd would kill him.<\/p>\n<p>Footage shows people chasing and then kicking him after Saturday&#039;s crash in which at least seven people - including Mexican World Cup fans - were injured.<\/p>\n<p>The man says he had been at the wheel for 20 hours, and mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.<\/p>\n<p>Detained at the scene, he has been identified by police as a 28-year-old national of Kyrgyzstan. <\/p>\n<p>A criminal investigation is now under way.<\/p>\n<h2>Driver&#039;s account<\/h2>\n<p>CCTV footage published in Russian media shows the taxi veer out of a queue of stationary traffic and accelerate into pedestrians before coming to a halt.<\/p>\n<figure>                                                                                                       Image copyright                  SNTV<figcaption>Image caption                                      The driver (centre) is chased by passers-by                              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The driver then tries to run away - but is quickly caught by several passers-by. <\/p>\n<p>The incident happened on the Ilyinka street near the Red Square - right in the heart of Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Police later released a video of the suspect being questioned about the crash. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;I wanted to brake, I wanted to let someone through,&quot; he says, visibly upset. &quot;I switched off for a second and hit the accelerator.... then I saw the people.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He says he fled because he thought the crowd of people &quot;were going to kill&quot; him. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;There were so many of them,&quot; he adds.<\/p>\n<p>He says he had about two hours of sleep before driving for 20 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, who says he is a teetotaller, says the crash was accidental. <\/p>\n<h2>&#039;Deliberate&#039; crash<\/h2>\n<p>But one witness, who was across the road at the time of the crash, questioned this. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have the feeling that he did it deliberately because he was in the traffic jam with the cars going really slowly,&quot; said Viktoria Geranovich.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;How could he lose control of the wheel, push the gas and drive into the crowds?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>She said &quot;mostly girls&quot; were knocked down, but people rushed to help and the ambulance arrived quickly. &quot;Thank god everything went well.
