{"id":142009,"date":"2018-06-16T11:58:11","date_gmt":"2018-06-16T11:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/glasgow-school-of-art-is-part-of-the-fabric-of-the-city\/"},"modified":"2018-06-16T11:58:11","modified_gmt":"2018-06-16T11:58:11","slug":"glasgow-school-of-art-is-part-of-the-fabric-of-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freeonlinetranslators.net\/news\/english\/glasgow-school-of-art-is-part-of-the-fabric-of-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow School of Art is &#8216;part of the fabric of the city&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>                                  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Glasgow School of Art fire\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/8955\/production\/_102075153_6cb956bd-a563-4d66-90a2-48022525fdca.jpg\"\/>Image copyright                  Getty Images                                                    <\/figure>\n<p class=\"caps\">Glaswegians are coming to terms with the fact that one of their most famous buildings has, once again, been ravaged by a fire.<\/p>\n<p>Local MP Alison Thewliss said she was &quot;devastated&quot; adding the Glasgow School of Art was &quot;part of the fabric of the city&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Secretary David Mundell said the UK government was ready to help.<\/p>\n<p>Comedian Susan Calman sent her thoughts to the school&#039;s students and staff  as well as the fire service.<\/p>\n<figure>                                                                                                       Image copyright                  Reuters                                                    <\/figure>\n<p>Maria Papanatsiou, a researcher at Glasgow University, lives around the corner from the building. <\/p>\n<p>She was sitting in her living room when she saw the flames through a window.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I went down to the street and was there for at least two hours,&quot; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Maria was not the only one - others had come to watch, including clubbers who had been evacuated from nearby buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Everyone was very sad,&quot; she says, &quot;One guy was even crying.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Maria has lived in the area since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#039;ve watched as the restoration went up, and now it&#039;s come down,&quot; she says.  <\/p>\n<h2>&#039;Confused and shocked&#039;<\/h2>\n<p>Artist Tako Taal was in the school student union bar when the fire broke out.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We saw people coming in and out saying there was a small fire,&quot; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You could smell smoke coming in. There were already two firemen on the scene and we were moved away really quickly.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Everyone was confused and shocked.  I&#039;ve never seen a fire this large before.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>&quot;The firefighters were really great,&quot; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Artist and TV presenter Lachlan Goudie said he was &quot;horrified&quot; by the ravaging of the building describing it as &quot;a terrible bereavement&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This building was part of Glasgow&#039;s soul, a visual expression of Scottish creativity at its peak,&quot; he said. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;To see it devastated once was horrendous, to see it assaulted by the flames a second time is gut wrenching.&quot;<\/p>\n<h2>&#039;Overwhelming&#039;<\/h2>\n<p>Louise Rowley studied at the school and was travelling back to the city for the first time since graduating.<\/p>\n<p>During her time there she worked as a tour guide for the building.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The whole building is overwhelming,&quot; she says. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;The hen-run is a beautiful glass room at the back of the building, uniting the east and west wings, somewhere to get inspiration. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#039;s so well thought-about and so inspirational.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Thewliss said she was &quot;absolutely devastated&quot; by the news describing the building as &quot;part of the fabric of the city.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It is something we hold very dear,&quot; she added.<\/p>\n<p>She said a lot of skill and talent had gone in to the restoration work. &quot;It&#039;s a real blow to see the damage done last night,&quot; she said. <\/p>\n<p>She also sent out a plea for any support that could be given. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Mundell said the UK government was &quot;committed to ensuring this iconic building will be restored if it can be&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the way Glaswegians felt about the Glasgow School of Art was equivalent to how Londoners felts about Big Ben.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;People feel an association with the building even if they have never crossed its threshold.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Comedian and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Calman said: &quot;Thinking of staff, students, alumni  and the wonderful emergency services who, as always, fought to save such a treasure.
