VW said last year that its total bill for fixing engines in the US was $30bn.<\/p>\n<p>The Volkswagen scandal erupted in September 2015, when the company admitted that nearly 600,000 cars sold in the US were fitted with &quot;defeat devices&quot; designed to circumvent emissions tests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image copyright Getty Images Car giant Volkswagen has been fined \u20ac1bn (\u00a3880m) by German prosecutors over its diesel emissions scandal.
